What are Tales from Texas?
Having just moved halfway across the country, we ought to be surprised by some cultural changes, right? Let's try to capture some of the surprises before they become familiar.
The Mysterious Ski Rack
A common experience for drivers: you're cruising along in the left lane, passing everything in sight. You look in the rear view mirror and see a car with a light bar. Oh, sh*t, the heat. If you're really speeding, guilt makes the heart skips a few beats. Slow down, pull over a lane. Pray for no blue lights. When the car finally catches up, you see that it is a ski rack, on a civilian car, not a light bar on a police vehicle. Oh, rats.
Very common experience, right? In New England, anyway, where there are lots of ski resorts, hence skis, hence ski racks. But why did I see one yesterday, down here? What I thought was a cop car was just a car. With Texas plates, too. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. There can't be a ski resort for a thousand miles. (Well, maybe seven hundred. Taos is probably closer than Denver.) Fooled *me*.
