More Billboards
June 2000
On the subject of billboards, some recipients objected that billboards are everywhere. Well, sure. I'm just not sure that they're quite the same elsewhere. Several modest examples follow.
The first example comes from correspondent Louise Peach, a long-time resident of this area who has not lost her sense of humor.
'I wanted to add my two cents about the roadside advertising. There is a sign on the road to Bastrop (actually I think it is when you are returning from Bastrop) - huge sign - advertising vasectomy reversals. I had always assumed that billboard advertising's purpose was to stir your interest in something you may not have thought about before. I wonder how many people drive by this sign and say, "You know, Ethel, I think I should just stop and get one of those!" '
And then there's one very near my house that offers paternity testing by 800 number and the web: "Who's the father? Find out for sure. Call 1-800-DNA-TYPE"
Who knew that there was such an industry in this field? And something about it makes the Sixties, as promiscuous as they were, seem innocent, relatively.
